Race walking is defined by USATF (USA Track & Field) with a two part definition as follows:

  • Race walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs.
  • The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical upright position.

If you violate either portion of the definition a judge may give you a proposal for disqualification. Receive three proposals from three different judges (or one under specific circumstances in international competitioin) and you are disqualified from the race.

During the race a disqualifiation board, similar, but not usually as advanced as below, is visible from the course so you may monitor your status.
